Happy Birthday Mema!

Friday was Grandma Mary's birthday. It was an odd birthday. Lynzi and I met with Pastor Scott Skogen to plan Jason's funeral earlier that day.

We got together at Lynzi's house for a sweet corn and a casserole that was dropped off by a generous person, not sure who. We stopped and picked up a cake.

Kendyll stole the show with her cake eating skills. She didn't know what to do when Lynzi gave here a big piece of cake. She has been used to crumbs. By the end she was a mess and went straight to the sink for a bath.

After supper I went outside for some basketball and Frisbee with the girls. We played horse and around the world. We ended up be seeing who could make the craziest shot.

A Life Remembered: Baldner had a ‘can-do’ spirit

Article from the July 29th LaCrosse Tribune

In ninth grade, Jason Baldner wrote a poem with a line, “I say winners never quit and quitters never win.”
It was something he believed then and throughout his life. Whether clutching a waterskiing rope through wipeouts in rough water, barreling down the most challenging mountain bike path or leading the life of a successful entrepreneur, Baldner never gave up.
“The thing that set Jason apart was that he approached life with an incredible can-do attitude,” said Rick McGarry, close friend.
Baldner, 35, died Wednesday after suffering serious injuries in a speedboat crash in Florida on May 8.
Longtime friend Tim Desmond remembers how Baldner would fall down and keep getting back up when learning to waterski at age 7.
That determination continued as a teenager and young adult when he won numerous city, state and national awards for barefoot waterskiing.
Baldner wouldn’t let go no matter how rough the water, friends said. And when he fell, he always managed to pull himself back up, said friend Jon Franz who skied with Baldner in the Tommy Bartlett Show in Wisconsin Dells in the 1990s.
“He would be on his back hanging there and then whip himself around smiling away,” said friend Corey Zarecki who skied with Baldner in the River City Waterski Team.
Baldner was just as competitive on a mountain bike. He and friend Bruce Van Epps would ride during lunch breaks while working at Kitchen Solvers.
“Taking a leisure ride just didn’t happen,” said Van Epps. “Whoever got the most dirt on them or left the most skin on the trail had the most bragging rights. Jason usually won those rights.”
Baldner tested the most technical downhill mountain bike trail he encountered, said friend Paul Darrington.
“There were sections I would say, ‘I’m not gonna try it, and he would try it,” he said.
Baldner not only played hard, he worked hard, friends said. He was president of Kitchen Solvers from 2003 to 2008 and later launched 411 Technologies, an IT business support company, in January 2009.
Van Epps was amazed how many e-mails he received from Baldner late at night about thoughts and ideas related to work at Kitchen Solvers.
“He couldn’t wait to discuss new ideas and ways to improve things,” he said.
Baldner was also ambitious when it came to his wedding proposal to wife Lynzi Baldner. Instead of a traditional dinner and night out, he mouthed the words while barefoot waterskiing on one foot. He managed to let go, unzip his wet suit and pull out the ring box, said Todd Jordan, another close friend who watched from the boat.
“Who could turn that down?” he said.
Baldner wasn’t one to miss out on a good time, said Jordan. He was always the last up talking at a late night campfire and the first up in the morning raring to go, he said.
And, when Baldner grew older and he and Lynzi had four daughters, he found he enjoyed life even more. When Franz became a new father in December 2008, he got an e-mail from Baldner.
“I’m sure you are enjoying being a dad, it is a great experience and I enjoy being a parent more than anything else,” he wrote.

Country Jam 2010

July 22nd to the 24th was Country Jam. We have been going every year since Jayde was about 5. My my how fast the time goes. This year the girls went all out and sported some Cowboy Boots.

The headliners were Jason Aldean on Thursday, Miranda Lambert on Friday and Sugerland on Saturday night. Once again I thought Sawyer Brown was the best even though they were not a headliner. The girls loved The Low Cash Cowboys! The other groups were Jake Owen, Billy Currington, Luke Bryan, Chris Cagle, Big Kenny, Stealing Angels, Tim Sigler and Rocket Club.

The Girls with "Rocket Club"! An up and coming group, maybe?

Jolene and the kids visit 7-13 to 7-20

Below are some of the photo's of the kids from there visit. It was a panicked visit so we didn't really get a lot of pictures. These are pictures that I stole from Jayde's face book.  Jason was not expected to make it more than a few days and Jolene and the kids flew out to see him. We did get away one day to the Dells and gave my mother and Lynzi a much needed break.

Dales in the Dells - Take 2

Marshall and Lauren were in town with Jolene for the week. Things were not good with Jason but we decided to take the kids to the dells for the day. Brooke had won two Noah's Ark passes at the Morris Challenge race in June and we had promised to take the kids. It was just a bonus that Marsh and Lauren were here. We had a great time! Brooke was scared of most rides but was a brave girl and went on everything we threw at her. Grechyn was a little to young for the trip, next year.
From the Dells to home we went with a stop at Buffalo Wild Wings. While we were there Lauren made a little bet with Brooke that she couldn't eat the hot sauce. Brooke is Brooke and of course took the challenge for the reward of $2. Post challenge Brooke tossed her supper on Lauren and the table. That's karma for ya!

Valley Fair.

Yesterday Jayde, Lance and Alicia headed out early to Valley Fair in Minneapolis. Jayde was meeting her friend Samantha and some friends from the E.F.Y session at St.Peter. Turns out the friends were six boys. That's it just Samantha, Jayde and six boys. We had wanted to go but decided to stay home and keep an eye on Jason's condition. We recruited Lance and Alicia to take our place. Would have been fun but would have been a long day. Lance didn't even go on my favorite ride, The Xtreme Swing! Cluck, cluck, cluck, chicken!

Life is not always fair.

This weekend was a hard weekend. Jason was moved to a hospice patient. In the past when I would visit I would leave with some hope. I always felt it was an up hill battle, but at least there was hope. For the first few weeks you could cling to some small improvement and say that things were at least headed in the right direction. But the words from the doctors in Florida have stayed in my mind. When they said that maybe Jason would be the miracle you just knew things were not good. There is still a glimmer of hope, but at this point only a miracle from God could make him better. Jason is beyond the point where the doctors can help him.

I  felt so empty leaving his room on Friday. It was a total different feeling than the past. I know that we will all be together again, but the separation will be so hard. You just realize that things will never be the same again. You realize how fragile life is. My heart aches for Lynzi and the girls. Jason was a hands on dad and the girls and Lynzi will miss him so much. We all will.

On Sunday we went to Sacrament and then headed down to see Jason. Things were about the same. On our way home decided to invite the girls to see Toy Story 3 and give Lynzi a much needed break. We had a great time with the girls but it's hard to see them and not think about what is to come. We met my parents at Perkins for supper with the girls. They are always entertaining, never a dull minute with those girls around. We enjoyed a few great laughs about the movie. My favorite was "Big Baby", she cracked me up! Big baby was the enforcer in the movie. Even though it was a kids movie there were some great subtle humor for the parents. I tease the girls to watch out or big baby will be coming for them!

The coming weeks are going to be hard. I'm dreading them.

A dark day

Today was a bad day for our family. Jason has taken a turn for the worse. We had a care meeting today. Things have gone down hill in regards to Jason's condition. For the last two weeks the doctors have been trying to remove the fluid that is accumulating on Jason's brain. The fluid has continued to accumualte even though a shunt was installed. It has caused the ventricles in his brain to grow. He is also fighting several infections.

We were told that Jason would never be able to care for himself. It would be a miracle if he could recognize people and have any kind of normal life. It would take surgery after surgery to even give him this slim chance. And even with the miracle he would require 24 hour constant care. He would require a feeding tube and suctioning of his lungs and face of life of fighting infection after infection. We were told to think of Jason and what his wishes would be if he were here to make this choice. It was obvious what we needed to do and were in agreement. Jason is suffering. So it is in the Lords hands and we will continue to pray for Jason and leave the outcome to him. Now is not a time to be selfish, now is the time to honor what we feel Jason would want. No matter how difficult it is for all of us.

Cool Shwag!

Zipp sent me a bunch of cool stuff for rushing there Tour De France labels out so fast. Pretty awesome to think that our labels are on the bikes at the tour again this year. I'm still a Lance fan.

4th of July

It was a rainy rainy fourth of July. We all went to Church and then home to watch the rain. Jason had a sudden surgery to put a shunt in his head . He had been sleeping the last two days and there was a lot of fluid on his head. I was down to see him in the morning and he was non responsive. We has supper with my parents at Famous Dave's and then went to see Jason. He was awake and doing much better. We stopped to visit with Lynzi and the girls. Leslie and her girls are staying with Lynzi and it was a pretty crazy house. It was nice to see them having fun but they miss there dad and my heart goes out to them

Today we went to Winona and played a little disc golf at the Willows. It was a pretty windy day but the breeze felt good with the heat. It was near 90 and humid. Tomorrow is the Chileda calasic so were taking it easy today.
