Today I joined Lynzi for a meeting at Gunderson Hospital to meet with the doctors concerning Jason's status. We had thought this was not a big meeting. Wrong! There were at least 10 medical people in the meeting. Ranging from social workers to neurologists. I panicked when I saw a minister come in to the room.
Jason has made some progress. He is now listed as medically stabel. Meaning that all of his vitals are good and they are not treating any immediate concerns. He is still scored as being in a coma and is not able to participate in therapy. This means that it is time for Jason to move to another facility.
Now comes the sticky part. Ideally Jason goes to a rehabilitation center that specializes in head trauma. There are none of these facilities in LaCrosse. The doctors recommended three facilities. One facility located in the twin cities, another near Madison and the last in Milwaukee. The next hurdle we may need to face is who is willing to pay for this type of facility. The insurance company is expected to balk at this and push for a nursing home. We have already decided, NO WAY TO A NURSING HOME. This would be like giving up on Jason.
The meeting was a "Glass Half Empty" meeting. At this point we are praying for a miracle. Jason is continuing to show signs of more and more movement but now we need to see purposeful movement. Meaning movement were he is following commands of the doctors. He appears much more alert but is not at the next level. The doctors explained that he could stay in this condition for a month, a year or maybe forever. They just don't know. They explained it as a big black box and nobody knows what happens next. My heart just sank and I don't know how Lynzi could digest all of what we were being told. But she holds it together and keeps fighting for Jason and what's best for him.
So it's on to the next phase and the process of finding Jason the best care is on. At this point we are all praying that Jason is the next miracle. The doctors have said it doesn't look good but they would love to be wrong. Are prayers are that they are.
