Monday night I set out on a short ride before my lawn work. I was doing my favorite loop of 26 miles. It has two good climbs and some rollers. I climbed the second hill and started my decent. I got to the long straight on the bottom of the hill, let off the brake. I looked down and I was at 40mph. Then out of know where a deer pops out of the ditch right in front of me. Then there is that split second where you realize your going to hit it. I slammed the deer and flew over the front of the bike. I kind of tucked and rolled. When I stopped sliding I looked back and saw the deer get up and walk in to the woods.
I lay ed in the road for about 5 to 10 minutes and there was not a car in sight. I managed to get up and get my cell phone and called for help. My bike was in three pieces! The carbon tubes were snapped right in half. To make a long story short I'm road rash from the neck down and received a bunch of stitches in my elbow. My foot is really swollen and my little toe is broken. Every day more and more of my body hurts.
So what really sucks is that next week started the taper for Ironmna Wisconsin. Looks like its not in the cards for me this year. That really sucks after all of the hard training! I still plan on going and will volunteer at the finish line. It will be hard to watch but I could not just stay home.
Today as I layed on the recliner zonked on percocet I remembered that phrase in the commercial for the Tour this year. The phrase where they say imagine traveling down the road in your car, stripping down to your underwear and jumping out at 40 mph. I can now tell you that it really hurts.
All for now. I'll post some bike pictures when I pick it up. Oh yea, maybe I'll post some gorry road rash pictures for Spedo Steve. I know he likes those gross out pictures.
Man, like I said on Facebook, this just royally sucks. Get better, heal up and hit it again next year. Come back faster and stronger and it'll make the finish that much sweeter for you.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll race with a black band around my arm in your honor Sept 7th ;-)
OMG that's scary! I don't know what would hurt more: the crash, seeing your bike in 3 pieces, or missing IM.
ReplyDeleteWell, there's always more in the future. Get healed up and build on what you've got from your current training.
I was reading the clyde's blog and came to your blog. I am so sorry about the deer incident. I am praying for your quick recovery. I will be volunteering at IMWI. One of my duties will be at the finish line. I cannot remember what time. Maybe I'll see ya there.
ReplyDeleteTake care of yourself.
Sorry about your bike.

ReplyDeleteBest wishes for speedy healing.
So nice that you're going to volunteer... I'd find that really hard after having to pull the handles on an event.
Oh my goodness. Well I am glad that you are okay and able to blog about this. At least you will be up and running again for next year and you will have an awesome comeback story.
ReplyDeleteYour pictures of your "boo-boos" look....OUCH!!! I hope you recover quickly!!!
wow. you're lucky! my friend got hit by a car (its no deer...but still) during one of her triathlons in salt lake city a few months ago. she was pretty banged up. kind of a neat story...maybe? lol
